Microsoft Project Case:

Shoreline Stadium Case

The G&E Company is preparing a bid to build the new 47,000-seat Shoreline baseball stadium. The construction must start on July 1, 2020, and be completed in time for the start of the 2023 season in April. A penalty clause of $250,000 per day of delay beyond April 1st is written into the contract.

Percival Young, the president of the company, expressed optimism at obtaining the contract and revealed that the company could net as much as $3 million on the project. He also said if they were successful, the prospects of future projects are bright since there is a projected renaissance in building classic ball parks with modern luxury boxes.

Questions:

Given the information provided in Table 6.3, using any project network computer program available to you to construct a network schedule for the stadium project and answer the following questions:

  1. Will the project be able to be completed by the April 3 deadline? How long will it take?
  2. What is the critical path for the project?
  3. Based on the schedule would you recommend that G&E pursue this contact? Why? Include a one-page Gantt chart for the stadium schedule.

Expert Solution

Before entering anything, make the following two changes:

Go to Project --> Projet Information and change the start date and current date:

Make all tasks auto-scheduled by default by clicking in the left bottom corner:

After this make the entries as follows:

Go to Go to Project --> Projet Information --> Statistics to note the completion date:

Go to the 'Detailed Gantt' view to develop the Gatt chart. The critical path will be in 'red' color.

So,

the critical path is 2-3-4-5-6-9-10-14-18-19-20

Case-1: The working time is standard S-Su off i.e. 5 days a week

The completion date is 13-02-24 and the target date was 01-04-23. So, there is a delay of 318 days.

Total penalty will be 318 * $250,000 = $79,500,000

The return from the project is only $3,000,000. So, the project is not worthy if the standard calendar of S-Su off is followed throughout.

Case-2: The working is 24 x 7. So, the 945 days competition time will lead to competition date = 01-Feb-2023

In this case, there will be no penalty and hence the project will be viable.
