Nitrogen is one of the most important form of the nutrients which is required by plants and animals but it cannot be taken directly by most aquatic plants and animals especially fishes.so it must be converted in some other form. One such form is ammonia which can be taken by the plants or which can be oxidised by bacteria in the into Nitrates or Nitrites.
Ammonia exists in two forms in water either as NH3 ( Principal form of toxic ammonia) or NH4+
NH3 is considered toxic to fresh water organisms in concentration range of 0.53 mg/l to 22.8 mg/l .
Experimentally it has been found that 0.2 to 2 mg/l of ammonia proves lethal to fishes.
WARM WATER HABITAT (WWH) : It is mostly applicable to rivers and streams. These water bodies are capable of sustaining and supporting the balanced , adaptive and integrated community of warm water aquatic organisms which has specific diversity, composition and functional organization.
