Market leader mangers need more interpersonal skills as they have to interact with more levels within the organization which is important to coordinating activities within units. They need more technical skills in order to be competitive, that also have to adapt to non routine situations so they require more conceptual skills. Both type of mangers need flexibility and leader motives in order to be successful. A market lead manger follows a participative style of leadership and a cost leadership manager follows a directive style of leadership as cost leader manager needs to focus that right people are doing the right jobs at the right time.

It is difficult to train executives as they already have much experience in their work and their ego comes in between all these. The training methods for executives are as follows:

  • Mostly the executive training is done on the job. An executive is learning his work while working.
  • Off the job methods can also be used which may include problem solving conferences and the case study methods.
  • Executives can be assigned an assistant who is expected to become aware of the tasks and practices of his superior.
  • Role playing can also be used where the executive may be put to a situation where he learns from a different perspective
  • Executives could be trained for better results by showing them the performance and working of competitor’s executives.
