Is IT a competitive advantage or a utility? Explain
IT is a competitive advantage.
Information technology are no longer limited to low-level employees and middle-level management authorities. They are mostly utilized by executives who try to understand changing business situation, anticipating problems and at the end increasing the competitive edge over others due to better understanding regarding the whole picture of the enterprise.
IT tend to become more strategic as capabilities of computers and software grow enormously and the ability to find and utilizing this competitive edge is as important as having better patent portfolio and better technology.
In some sense IT is becoming part of the technology which indicates that an element of company's competitive edge may also come from introduction of better Information technologies or from adoption of more modern, most efficient technologies faster than those of the competitor.
