Describe the Erikson's stage of intimacy versus isolation and give an example of what a person might go through in experiencing this stage of life.
Erikson's theory of psycho social development is based on conflicts. He believed an individual faces a conflict at each stage in life and upon successful resolution of that stage,a person develops psychological abilities. These abilities help an individual in later life and if a person fails to resolve these conflicts it shows up as trivial issues in later life.
Intimacy versus isolation is the sixth stage of psycho social development. It takes place from the age of 19 to 40. This stage is characterised by formation of close intimate relationships.Successful resolution of this crisis leads to development of close relationships with friends and family.Failure to resolve this crisis results in feelings of isolation and loneliness. These people struggle to form any relationship and often feel lonely seeing others in romantic relationships. They fear commitment in relationships.Intimacy doesnt involve engagement in sexual activity but emotional closeness and bonding.Being able to share oneself with your partner is as crucial as maintaining your self identity.
For example-A person learns the meaning of love.Upon discovering that, relationships with friends, family and peers become more stronger. One starts deciding what qualitites they look for in a partner.Once a person resolves conflict in this stage, intimate relationships is formed based on closedness, honesty, romanticism.Often relationships formed with love result in a lifelong marriage in this stage.
