Two Vietnam had been part of the French Empire before World War II.

It was invaded by Japan during World War Two. Ho Chi Minh was the leader of the Vietminh, a Vietnamese independence resistance army.

Two Ho Chi Minh seized Hanoi in 1945 after World War and proclaimed Vietnam to be autonomous. The French again attempted to take power, but with the individuals this was unpopular. The Vietminh at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 defeated them.

Peace was discussed in 1954 in Geneva and the Geneva Treaty decided that the French would leave Vietnam and that the nation would be divided along the 17th Parallel until elections could be held.

Under communist leader Ho Chi Minh, the Vietminh wished to unite the nation. Many of the individuals of South Vietnam backed Ho Chi Minh because they were dissatisfied with Ngo Dinh Diem.

Between the North and South, war broke out. From 1958 onwards, in South Vietnam itself, the South came under growing assaults by communists. They were called the National Liberation Front (NLF)

This was the conviction that if one nation fell to communism, the neighboring one would probably fall as well–comparable to a row of dropping dominoes. This had occurred after 1945 in Eastern Europe. In 1949, China became a communist and North Vietnam was controlled by communists.

The US was scared of communism spreading to South Vietnam and then to the remainder of Asia. It decided to send cash, supplies, and military consultants to assist the government of South Vietnam.

Diem was a corrupt leader who refused to grant land to the farmers. He did not like Buddhism and handled the population predominantly Buddhist poorly. As a consequence, a large part of the population of South Vietnam rebelled against him. The farmers wanted communism and the Vietminh and the NLF were endorsed.

In 1963, to assist the South Vietnamese army, President John F Kennedy sent 16,000 military ' advisors.' The government of Diem has been overthrown. After that, there was no powerful South-controlled capitalist government.

The North Vietnamese in the Tonkin Gulf attacked the U.S. Navy. This event gave the USA the excuse for escalating the conflict.

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution— U.S. Congress gave authorization to wage war on North Vietnam to President Lyndon Johnson. U.S. Marines ' first significant contingent arrived in 1965.

The participation of the United States improved for the next ten years. By 1968, Vietnam had been home to over half a million American soldiers and the war cost $77 billion a year.
