self disclosure is a process in which one person would be revealing information about them self to another person. This information could be in the descriptive forms or could be in the evaluative forms and may be including feelings, thoughts or aspirations along with dreams that affect the success as well as fears of a person. This process of disclosure may also include favourites, or likes or dislikes.

Self disclosure may be both positive and negative. The different principles of self disclosure as:

  • Great deal of disclosure in fewer interactions.
  • Self disclosure taking place between two people.
  • Self disclosure that is occurring over a span of time.

Self disclosure is also explained by social penetration theory. Examples of negative self disclosure include:

  • Disclosing an unethical behavior such as when a person would be guilty about something in the form of a lie or an act of cheating.
  • Disclosing about the physical abuse done by one partner on the other in a relationship.

Examples of positive self disclosure:

  • Disclosing about an act of charity that has benefited someone in need.
  • Disclosing about a recent achievement.
