Very few of us like to pay taxes, but the concept of taxation precedes all of us. There are a number of verses and parables about tax collection, such as Luke 3:11-16: "He answered and said unto them. He that has two coats let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise" (King James 2000 Bible). Using any verse or parable from the Bible, compare and contrast the modern tax system with that from biblical times.

The modern tax system around the globe and in USA is a progressive tax system. This means that as and when income of a person increases the person will be subjected to higher amount of taxes. The taxes thus collected by the government are used by it to provide amenities and benefits to the citizens, develop infrastructure, ensure law and order is maintained etc.
Luke 2:12-13 says that “Some tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, 'Teacher, what are we to do?' Don't collect more than is legal, he told them." In Romans 13:6-7, St. Paul writes “That is also why you pay taxes, because the authorities are working for God when they fulfill their duties. Pay, then, what you owe them; pay your personal and property taxes, and show respect and honor for them all."
The above verses encapsulate the crux of the modern tax system. Tax payers have a duty and moral obligation to rightfully pay taxes that they owe while the tax collection authorities have to collect taxes in a fair and equitable manner.
