Apply the concept of allostatic load to your life right now. What factors can affect allostatic load? Younger adults and older adults respond differently to it. Factors affecting allostatic load -
1 .Work stress can be in any form as in
-extended prolonged working hours as it is in my case,72 hrs of duties working at a stretch in emergency wards in hospital. For that matter any work place with extended hours of work.
-Deadlines to be met at the work place cause allostatic load.
2. Job related issues like job instability or insecurity of retention of job or particular post in job
3. Educational status people belonging to lower educational status have more allostatic load. People with moderate education have uncertainty with their careers
4. Economic condition - studies suggest people belonging to lower socioeconomic status have more allostatic load that others with good economic status.
5. People with chronic or prolonged physical illnesses have greater allostatic load.
My response to increase allostatic load in my life is making necessary changes in my lifestyle which help me dealing with the increased stress in a positive way. Maintaining daily activity schedule,which includes enough physical exercise,adequate sleep,healthy food eating habits.
Practising positive psychology, embracing spirituality to an extent which is possible with busy work schedule, meditation and yoga is part of my daily routine which helps me build up physical as well as psychological health.
Maintaining healthy relations around which provide support in tough times.
Maintaining regular health checkups to ensure early screening of any health issues to be taken care of in time.
If I had to carry the same allostatic load for next 20 years ,I will make sure that I avoid majority of the bad effects that stress may cause to my body and health by continually practicing above mentioned things. I will make sure I maintain subjective well being as well so I will be stronger enough to deal with the load for coming years.
