When dealing with cultures, there are many belief that research support models that defines personality, whether is an evolutionary approach, or biological standpoint of cross-culture.
• Across cultures, there are various opinions and beliefs which shape the study methods and research models associated to the study of personality. In order to address changes in personality, the various perspectives within psychology have worked to identify various influential factors — biological approaches, evolutionary perspectives, etc… (Matsumoto, 2013). These perspectives are used in a wide range of cultures and, depending on the culture, there may be a dominant perspective. For example, according to Evans (2012), Japanese beliefs align with a biological perspective on personality.
• The character or personality of an individual is derived from their blood type according to popular Japanese beliefs (Evans). This belief has altered various industries (products catering to blood types) and also the perspective and approach to personality research; however, it also has a dark side in the form of discrimination against “undesirable” blood types (Evens). These differences in perspective are important to include when diagnosing and working with individuals from specific cultures (Matsumoto).
