It is a non traditional hybrid machining process nowdays becoming famous for these advantages:

Doesn't depend on work-tool hardness.
Complex contours can be machined easily.
No tool wear as this process is no contact type.
As the MRR is controlled by electrical parameters it is of high precision type and surface finish is better.

These hybrid processes are of two types:

1. Assisted ECM: In these hybrid processes laser beam, ultrasonic vibrations, abrasive jets are used to assist/facilitate the ECM process.

2. Combined ECM: In these processes conventional machining processes(milling, grinding, honning etc.) and non conventional processes(EDM, AJM etc) are directly introduced with non conventional ECM.

Advantages of Hybrid ECM:

High MRR can be obtained.
High surface finish is achieved.
Better flushing and circulation of electrolyte provide better machining.
Better mass & charge transport can be achieved.
Passivating layer can be easily removed.
