Ethanol (the drinking alcohol) C2H5OH, has a density of 0.789 g/cm3. How many pounds of ethanol would be in a drum containing 5.0 gallons of ethanol?

Solutions

Expert Solution

                        Density of ethanol = 0.789 g/ mL

Volume of tank = 5.0 gallons

Or, volume of tank = 5.0 x (3785.41 mL)                          ; [1 gallon = 3785.41 mL]

                                    = 18927.10 mL

# Mass of ethanol in tank = Volume x Density

                                    = 18927.10 mL x (0.789 g/ mL)

                                    = 14933.4819 g                                            ; [1 g = 14933.4819 lb]

                                    = 14933.4819 x (0.00220462 lb)

                                    = 32.923 lb

Hence, amount of ethanol in tank = 32.923 lb
