a) For each variable (calories and fat), compute the mean, median, first quartile, and third quartile.
b) For each variable (calories and fat), compute the variance, standard deviation, range, and interquartile range.
c) For each variable (calories and fat), compute the Z scores. Are there any outliers (extreme values)?
d) Based on the results from (a) through (c), what conclusions can you reach concerning the calories and fat in iced coffee drinks at these two companies?

Solutions

Expert Solution

I have done this problem in Minitab 16 and also providing formulae to the corresponding problems.

a) and b) At first enter the data regarding calories in a single column and data regarding fat in an another column.

Then go to StatBasic StatisticsDisplay Descriptive StatisticsSelect calories column in 'Variables' and click on the option 'Statistics'Tick on mean, median, first quartile, third quartile, standard deviation, Interquartile range, range, varianceOkOk.

Repeat the same steps for variable column 'Fat'.

c) To calculate to Statpresence of outliers go to GraphsBoxplot Simple select the variable column in Graph VariablesOkOk.

Repeat the same for another variable.

From the boxplots we can see that there is not outliers present in both data sets.

d) From a and c we can conclude data data 2 ie data regarding fat is more consistent that data 1 is calories since it has lesser variance.
