Alberta Labour Relations Act governs the labour relate issues in the province of Alberta, Canada
Two examples of type of industry or group of employees that are governed by the Alberta Labour Relations Act-
The Labour Relations Code governs labour relations for most employers /unions Examples- health care and construction.
Penalty for each of the following:
1. the employer
An employer / organization that starts a lockout contrary to the Act is guilty of an offence. The penalty includes a fine not exceeding $1000 for each day of lockout
2. the union and a person other than an employer or union
If a trade union causes a strike contrary to this Act, then it is guilty of an offence The penalty includes a fine not exceeding $1000 for each day of the strike.
A person who is not a trade union or member of a union or an officer who causes/takes part a strike contrary to this Act is guilty of an offence The penalty includes a fine not exceeding $10 000.
3. Offences against the Alberta Labour Code
For General offences against the code:
If an employer, employee or union fails to comply with the Act or the Board decisions under this Act , then they are guilty of offence
The penalty includes a fine not exceeding
(a) $100 000 –for corporations, employers’ organization or trade union
(b) $5000- in the case of individuals
