check your gas chromatogram for the presence of compounds other than isopentyl acetate. Explain the presence of any additional compounds.
Gas chromatography technique is used in separation/identification of organic compound in its gaseous phase ,based on its volatility measure and absorption by the column packing (stationary phase) .The compound is injected into the column with a gas stream moving up the column at a set speed, which ultimately come out of the column at a fixed .constant time called its retention time for a pure compound. However, any impurity or other compound eluates at different times, that can be seen as other peaks than the principal peak of the (analyte) inn the chromatogram. This difference of retention time occurs due to difference in molecular masses and polarity of the compounds ,as heavier ones have lower pace and greater retention times.
Standard compounds of known retention time is injected into the column firstly and their retention time noted,to compare with that of the analyte or test compound.
The presence of compounds other than isopentyl acetate cn be detected from various other peaks present in the gas chromatogram, apart from the principal peak with retention time same as that of standard isopentyl acetate.
