1. What is the product(s) of the reaction of KMnO4 with the orange oil? (See Reactions of Alkenes Chapter)

a) cold KMnO4

b) hot KMnO4

2. What is the product of the reaction of two moles of bromine with one mole of the orange oil? (See Reactions of Alkenes Chapter)

Solutions

Expert Solution

The main composition of the orange oil is D-limonene.

The carbon-carbon double bonds in the alkenes react with cold potassium permanganate solution to form corresponding 1,2 diols.

The product obtained on the reaction of D-limonene and cold potassium permanganate solution is 4-(1,2-dihydroxypropan-2-yl)-1-methylcyclohexane-1,2-diol which is shown below as:

The diols formed is not further oxidized in case of reaction with cold and dilute potassium permanganate. Whereas in the case of reaction of alkene with hot and concentrated potassium permanganate, these diols are further oxidized into ketone or carboxylic acid depending on the groups attached. R2C=CR2 converts to R2C=O , R2C = CRH convert to R2C = O and RCHO which further oxidize to RCOOH. Also, If HCOOH is formed, it oxidizes to carbon dioxide and water.

The products obtained on the reaction of D-limonene and hot potassium permanganate solution are 3-acetyl-6-oxoheptanoic acid and methanoic acid which further dissociates to carbon dioxide and water which is shown below as:
