I grew up on a small ranch in Southern California. For twelve years we raised goats, chickens, pigs, and horses. From a very young age I was taught to wake up early in the morning and begin caring for the animals. I was also taught to shoot a firearm at a young age as I would often have to ward off coyotes that would prey on our animals. I spent my days after school and on weekends taking care of the land and the house with my father, in addition to taking care of the animals. I soon developed a sense of pride that accompanies hard work and seeing the benefits of one’s labor. Growing up my parents constantly reminded me the importance of respect and honesty and those two values, among others, in addition to learning the importance of hard work at a young age have shaped who I am today.

My cultural background has also greatly impacted my success in the workplace. I am willing to work as hard as I can each and every day to ensure the success of the company. I respect my coworkers and if I make a mistake I will immediately own up to it. In recent weeks we have been very busy at work preparing a very large volume of product to ship to Hawaii for installation in November. This is in addition to the normal day-to-day activities and we cannot simply suspend day-to-day operations to complete the packing, which means I have been doing the bulk of packing on my own. It’s been hard work, and long days in the Southern California heat, but I know that this has to be done for the benefit of the entire company. It has been stressful at times wondering if I will be able to meet the deadline on my own, but because of how I was raised I continue to press on and do what is required.

I also find that it is important to understand my own cultural background and the things that I consider to be norms. Having a better understanding of myself has helped me better understand the differences in other people.
