1. A good friend of yours is asking you whether she/he should undergo psychoanalysis or client-centered therapy. Which factors would you consider before answering her/him, and what would be your final recommendation based on these factors?

Psychoanalysis therapy works towards bringing out the past conflicts as it believes that people’s past and childhood experiences would have significant impact on their present thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This would mean it would be based on the subjective experience which would focus on bringing out the conflicts repressed in the unconscious mind that would animate people to behave in a certain way thus limiting them from functioning effectively in the society. Client centered therapy works towards accepting people as they are through the concept of unconditional positive regard and now and here. This would mean it wouldn’t care about the past but would help the clients to live in the present. It accepts the clients with all their positive and negative characteristics without criticizing them. It helps the clients to decide the best course of action for themselves without forcing anything on them. This would mean that people would only be guided and taught to accept them as they are without criticising themselves or develop guilty feeling for their actions. In my opinion, I would suggest client centered therapy to my friend because it’s would help my friend to be accepted without any criticism while at the same time choose the best course of action. It’s more humanistic and contemporary than the psychoanalytic therapy.
