At low [blood glucose], what is your prediction about transport of glucose into adipose cells and braincells?
Explain your rationale.
At high [blood glucose], what is your prediction about transport of glucose into adipose cells and brain cells?
Explain your rationale.
In adipose cells: Under high blood sugar levels, Insulin is secreted by pancreas and in response to that glucose is transported into adipose tisuues for its storage as fat.
Under low blood sugar levels, Under low blood sugar levels, glucagon hormone is secreted by pancreas which induces breakdown of fat in adipose tissues to normalise blood sugar levels.
In Brain: Glucose is the major fuel for brain. Glucose is transported into brain through specialised glucose transporters. Regulation of Glucose transport to brain is not yet a well understood phenomena. Though studies suggest that the glucose transport is regulated through the expression of GLUT transporters. Under low glucose levels, brain respond by increasing the expression of transporters and increasing the transporters with high glucose affinity. Under high glucose levels, brain cells downregulate the expression of high affinity transporters and upregulates the expression of low affinity transporters.
