What is one benefit and one drawback of using Mammalia as a type of expression system that you would want to keep in mind when expressing a fusion protein using this system? Briefly explain each. Why is it important for Mammalia to have a relative ease of recovery?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The benefit of using mamalia system is that it is the best system for the productions of eukaryotic proteins as this system highly helps in correct protein folding and also in post translation modifications like glycosylation, phosphorylation etc as PTMs are not possible in prokaryotic systems like E.Coli and this system also helps in extraction of soluble proteins.

The main disadvantage of working with mamalian system is that it is expensive and a fragile system to maintain due to different complexities. It is difficult to scale up and also the overall yield is less.

The mammalian systems are fragile and require expertise to maintain as being eukaryotic they have numerous modifications and so they are difficult to understand and the extraction of recombinant protein is also very less and difficult. So they should have realtive ease of recovery so the recombinant protein can be extracted easily.
