octane number is the measure of how much compression a fuel can withstand before igniting. It also act as a standard measure of the performance of a gasoline engine(because in a deisel engine fuel is pumped only after compression of air) or aviation fuel.ocatne number also give the amount of knicking a fuel may produce in an engine.higher is the octane number lower is the knocking.(koncking is the kickback an engine experience in case the fuel is not completely burnt).
The octane rating of a compound is measured in a test engine and is defined by comparison with the mixture of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (iso-octane) and heptane that would have the same anti-knocking capacity as the fuel under test: the percentage, by volume, of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane in that mixture is the octane number of the fuel. For example, gasoline with the same knocking characteristics as a mixture of 80% iso-octane and 20% heptane would have an octane rating of 80.
benzene has the highest octane number of 105
hexene has lower octane number of 77
pentane has the lowest ocatne number of 62
NOTE:all the values are experimental and may differ.
