Do you think Latin American countries should give up some sovereign control over their affairs, specifically in regard to in areas such as human rights and the environment, or should countries be allowed to retain their right to self-determination in regard to managing these kinds of issues? Why or why not?
The Latin American countries should retain the right to self determination over the issue of human rights and environment, because it makes them take the right decisions that is most suitable for their own people, communities and economy. Though, the issues of human rights must be dealt as per the guidelines of United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) as sovereignty does not give the right to do any act if it is morally wrong and not correct. Besides, environment protection should also be done by these nations, while taking care of their own economic growth. So, the right to self determination, will bring added responsibilities to these nations regarding managing human rights of their people and preserving environment. Further, the right of self determination, will prevent other developed nation such as USA or EU from making interventions in the domestic affairs of these nations. Not doing so and foregoing the rights, will create a scope of regular intervention by these developed nations even if these developed nations also have poor records towards human rights and environmental conservation.
