For each of the five scenarios given below, indicate whether the change is physical or chemical in nature and explain the reasoning behind your answer.
1. A carbonated beverage container is opened, producing a fizzing sound and carbon dioxide bubbles.
Type of Change:
Explanation:
2. Dry ice (solid CO2) is taken from the freezer, placed into a container, and is held at room temperature. With time, the volume occupied by the block of dry ice decreases and there is a visible cloudiness in the air around the block.
Type of Change:
Explanation:
3. A chef is preparing a cake. The chef adds white vinegar (5% acetic acid, HC2H3O2, in water) to the batter which contains baking soda (NaHCO3). This addition creates the bubbles that cause leavening in the cake.
Type of Change:
Explanation:
4. The surface of silver flatware becomes black on exposure to air.
Type of Change:
Explanation:
5. One type of chemical heat pack is made by sealing water (H2O) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) in separate compartments. When the membrane between the components is broken and the substances are allowed to mix, there is a large amount of heat produced.
Type of Change:
Explanation:

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) the fizz of carbonated beverage is a physical change.

Reason: The dissolved CO2 gas comes out of the drink in the form of bubbles.

The CO2 gas is dissolved in the beverage at high pressure and when the can is opened, the pressure releases with fizz sound and gas escapes.

2) Physical change

Dry ice is solid CO2 .When dry ice is kept at room temperature it undergoes sublimation, that is goes directly into vapor from solid without becoming liquid (hence the name dry ice) causing the cloudiness tdue to accumulation of COs gas. As more gas is formed, more dry ice is sublimed and volume of block of solid ice decreases.

3) Chemical change

In the cake when vinegar and baking soda together are used, the reaction that occurs is

CH3COOH + NaHCO3 -----------> CH3COONa + CO2 +H2O

Due to this liberation of CO2 gas the the cake rises, beomes pluffy .

Thus baking soda along with viengar is used as a leavening agent in cakes.

4) chemical change

When the silverware is exposed to air, the small amounts of H2S gas present in air reacts with silver to form black silver sulfide that forms a black layer on the suface. It is known a tarnishing of silver.

The reaction is

2Ag(s) + H2S (g)-----------> Ag2S(s) + H2(g)

5)physical change

When the membrane is broken the components water and CaCl2 mix , Calcium chloride dissolved in water to liberate a lot of heat.

CaCl2 (s) + H2O(l) ------------> CaCl2(aq) + heat
