Lindane is thought to be bond to humic acid by H-bonding, hydrophobic interaction, as well as charge transfer mechanism (in case of transition metals present). The process is believed to be occurs through "sorption". Organic matter in humic substances possesses rubbery and glassy domains, that amorphous domains had higher sorption for organic compounds. Geosorbents of higher polarity can provide sites for water cluster formation at their surfaces through H-bonding. Water clusters reduce the surface hydrophobicity of sorbents and the accessibility of organic compound molecules to sorption domains. But, this is not 100% perfect solution for how lindane bonding to humic material, still research is going on to understand the exact mechanism.
