Consociational Democracy is a form of democracy where a stable
government is formed despite the internal divisions within the
state. These internal divisions may be of ethnic, religious,
linguistic groups or other social groups. This form of democracy
allocates collective rights to these groups. The power sharing
agreement is featured by allocating collective rights to these
groups. There is also a proportional representation of the social
groups.
Below are its peaceful percepts -
1. Executive power sharing - The government is formed by means of a grand coalition with representation of leaders from all segments of society.
2. Mutual veto - The state gives right to veto the government decisions to these groups. This is will be needed so as to have a mutual agreement among parties in the executive.
3. Proportional Representation - To lend a voice in policy making, these social groups are given proportional representation in country's decision making body.
4 Autonomous rule within the state: The minority groups get self rule for their territory with in the state.
