Give an example of a product that combines component standardization and modular design? what would be the step by step process for creating this product?
Modular design=>
a form of standardization in which component parts are grouped into modules that are easily replaced or interchanged.
Reliability=>
a measure of the ability of a product, a part, a service, or an entire system to perform its intended function under a prescribed set of conditions. Reliabilities are specified with respect to certain conditions called normal operation conditions. Failure is used to describe a situation in which the item does not perform as intended.
=>Ways to improve reliability include:
>Improve component design
>Improve production and/or assembly techniques
>Improve testing
>Use backups
>Improve preventive maintenance procedures
>Improve user education
DESIGN FOR MANUFACTURING:>
The following are concepts that are associated with design in manufacturing.
Concurrent engineering=>
bringing design and manufacturing engineering people together early in the design phase to simultaneously develop the product and the processes for creating the product. The purpose is to achieve product designs that reflect customer wants as well as manufacturing capabilities. Without concurrent engineering, designers create a design and then pass it on to manufacturing without consideration for how to make something.
Advantages:>
>Manufacturing personnel know the capabilities and capacities of equipment and personnel
>Any new equipment needed in manufacturing can begin during the design stage and reduce time to marketoDisadvantages
>Overcoming longstanding barriers between design and manufacturing can be difficult to overcome
>A lot of communication and flexibility is needed.
Computer-aided design (CAD)=>
using computer graphics for product design. These systems
replace paper drawings and can provide more functionality when
designing specifications for products.
