Robert Agnew delineated the star in theory in the field of criminology to help explain the reason why crime takes place and the factors that potentially contribute to its manifestation in individuals.
He mentioned three different factors that can lead to strain (pressure) on a person life the first being the presence of negative effects the absence of positive effects and the desire to fulfill an objective. All of these can contribute or lead to the committing of a crime.
The most major policy implication that comes through strain theory is by understanding the prognosis of the issue. The strain theory essentially shed light on the fact that crime essentially takes place in people when they do not have the tools to cope emotionally with the aspects of their lives. This crime, in turn, becomes a form of defense mechanism from the unwanted emotions.
One way that crime can be managed in sensitive groups is by equipping people with the necessary tools for being able to manage and cope with such emotions and feelings in a healthy way - by a constructive outlet.
