How might a culture influenced by political correctness impact the idea of freedom of speech and free trade in ideas as Holmes proposes?

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Political correctness is definitely shaping out freedom of speech and somewhat limiting it.The basic premise being that if some pseudo-intellectuals and pundits can influence how we as individuals think and act, then they can also influence what is socially ‘acceptable’ language. By imposing their political views on some subjects, they create a pressure to conform to these standards. People are taking advantage of the system to avoid responsibility for their own actions.
  • Also, political correctness is often used as an excuse for racism/sexism/homophobia and other unsavoury behaviours. It is not politically correct to use slurs against people, it is not politically correct to demean their background or identity in any way shape or form. This does limit the speech of the opressor (the one making the comments) but it increases the ability for the opressed to speak up.
  • According to me,political correctness was created as away to invite historically marginalised people to the table and give them the ability to speak. Freedom of speech isn't just so you can speak your mind, it is so that we can all learn. If your society isn't moving forward, then it may be that the narrative needs to change. Speaking your mind needs to be done a responsible way and not just screaming anything from across the table.Ofcourse, freedom to speech will always be challenged, since everyone has an opinion and everyone has the right to say whatever they want and some would consider it honest and some offensive.
