Standing waves on a guitar string form when waves traveling down the string reflect off a point where the string is tied down or pressed against the fingerboard. The entire series of distortions may be superimposed on a single figure, like this (Intro 2 figure) , indicating different moments in time using traces ofdifferent colors or line styles.
What is the wavelength λ of the standing wave shown onthe guitar string?
We know the distance between two successive nodes = λ / 2
From figure distance between two successive nodes = 20 cm
i.e. λ / 2 = 20 cm
so, the wavelength of the standing wave λ = 40cm
