How does one differentiate between joint mobilizations and chiropractic adjustments?
Both are manual therapy done by skilled individuals. Joint mobilization is not manipulation where as chiropractic adjustment is manipulation. In mobilization small passive movements are done where as in manipulation a controlled sudden force is applied and joint is forced to move beyond its normal range of movement.
In joint mobilization passive movement is done in skeletal joint which is involved in joint gliding motion. It is usually focussed on synovial joint. In joint mobilization movements of varying amplitude and speeds can be done to muscle, nerves and joints. Joint mobilization is done to reduce muscle spasms , pain and to improve movement.
Chiropractic adjustment is done in spinal joint. It is spinal manipulation.Spinal manipulation is done to improve spinal movement and body's function. In joint mobilization movements was of varying speed and amplitude where as in chiropractic adjustment a controlled sudden force is applied. Chiropractic adjustment is done mainly for treatment of back pain, head ache and neck pain.
motion
Jointjoint mobilization as "a manual therapy technique comprising a continuum of skilled passive movements that are applied at varying speeds and amplitudes to joints, muscles or nerves with the intent to restore optimal motion, function, and/or to reduce pain."[1]
