Per Richard Robbins what is the role of food in a capitalist economy
In a simple form capitalist can be described as a pursuit of wealth.Wealth may be in the form of things or money.Robbins says that the object of Capitalism is not to obtain goods for other goods but to obtain money. In capitalism , people produce not for their use but for exchange.Capitalist is a person or business entity that desires to make profit. They provide money to get the production of goods started.Capitalism requires three component, the capitalist, labourer, the consumer. The consumer is the most important in a capitalist economy and is required to consume more .The consumer exchanges money for goods . The more money is invested in production of goods the more profit is made. The agricultural sector saw the use of more machinery which forced farmers out of job as the use of machinery required less labor to produce food.So the peasants became factory labourers in the city. The shift from trading and bartering system into a capitalist economy saw peasants working as factory workers and trading labor for money.People could buy food with the money. As more people started buying food with money, the capitalist business owners made money and more profit and thus capitalism began to work.
