4. A researcher studying synaptic transmission in a glutamatergic hippocampal neuron measures calcium flow in the postsynaptic hippocampal neuron after either low or high intensity stimulation to the presynaptic neuron. Predict the results of the different stimulations.
A. There will be an efflux calcium after high intensity stimulation.
B. There will be an influx calcium after low intensity stimulation.
C. There will be an influx calcium after both types of stimulation (stimulation occurs at separate times, not together).
D. There will be an efflux calcium after low intensity stimulation.
E. There will be an influx calcium after high intensity stimulation.
OPTION C. There will be an influx calcium after both types of stimulation (stimulation occurs at separate times, not together). Is teh correct answer
Glutamatergic neurotransmitter is an excitatory neurotransmitter whihc are mainly seen in the brain neuron for communication.
Glutamate neurotransmitter are released from teh presynaptic neuron into the synaptic cleft will moves and bind with the glutamate receptor like AMPA receptors, kainate receptors and NMDA receptors present on teh post synpatic neuron.
For example, when the glutamate bind with the NMDA receptor present on the post synaptic membrane can result in the influx of calcium ions through via the channel into the cell.
Both High intensiity stimulation and low intensity stimulation cause influx of calcium ion into the cell. The difference is high fintensity stimulation causes high concentration of calcium ions in the cell which result in activation of rotein kinase which convert teh synaptic protein dephosphorylated into phosphorylated form.
Low intensity stimulation result in low concentrattion of calcium in the cell which causes activation of protein phosphatase which will dephosphorylate the synaptic protein.
