name all of the hormones produces by the pancreas and describe the hormone’s main purposes

Solutions

Expert Solution

The pancreas has both exocrine and endocrrine components. It is a mixocrine gland.Exocrine compartment releases digestive enzymes into the duodenum to digest the chyme coming from the stomach.

The endocrine pancreas will release hormones rather than the salt or enzymes. These hormones go into the bloodstream. And they will move on elsewhere throughout the body to the liver perhaps the Intestine or even as far as muscles to cause things to happen. And the way the endocrine pancreas is organized is that there are many 'islets' cells that exist as Islands. There are three main types of islets cells. These are groups of specialized endocrine cells in pancreas

.
1. Alpha islet cells: producers hormone called glucagon.the main function of glucagon is to take things like glycogen which is a whole bunch of glucose molecules that are stacked up on top of each other and then break them down into smaller glucose monomers or molecules. Hence it make glucose from glycogen.
2. Beta islet cells: it house and release insulin. The insulin is responsible for the opposite reaction to the glucagon. Insulin causes glucose to be stored or built up into glycogen. This hormone is responsible for the disease known as diabetes. Diabetes causes damage to the body because the body have too much glucose floating around in blood. This happens because insulin is not working properly. The reason is insulin dependent storage of glucose and glycogen. Instead it runs all of the body through the blood. Diabetes affects vision, general sensation and kidney. The sensations in feet are not able to detect by the body which will lead to the amputation of the feet. The kidney stops working over time, Which can lead to dialysis that causes early death. Glucose also causes earlier onset of heart attack and other types of complications.
There are two types of diabetes type 1 and type 2.

  • In type 1 diabetes we have no insulin.
  • In type 2 diabetes the insulin receptors are broken. Hence the receptors will not respond to insulin.

3. Delta islet cells:
The cells release hormone called somatostatin. Its main function is to stop all other hormones that are active in the body like glucagon insulin cholecystokinin etc. It is actually the antagonist of somatotropin- 'the growth hormone. Hence somatostatin is growth inhibiting hormone.
