Compare and Contrast two organic macromolecules. brief explain.
Which organic molecules are always, sometimes, never water soluble? brief explain
Ans) There are basically four organic macromolecules – carbohydrate, protein, lipids, and nucleic acid, which helps in all the metabolic and regulatory function of the body. However, in this we will draw the comparison and contrast between carbohydrate and protein. The carbohydrates are an important macromolecule which are act as the main source of energy provider in the body. The main form of carbohydrate which helps in production of energy in the body is glucose. The carbohydrate is required for providing energy and running all the important functions in the body. The proteins are organic macromolecules which are made from chain of amino acids which are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and nitrogen. The proteins are the building block of the body and hence it helps in development of muscles and building up of tissues which helps in performing various functions. The proteins helps in many regulatory function and overall maintenance. It helps in maintaining and production of healthy bones, muscles, skin, hair etc. Hence, the main role played by the carbohydrate is it helps in providing fuel to the body cells for energy and proteins are building blocks and it helps in development of healthy cells.
Ans) The carbohydrates are organic macromolecule which are made from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen and they are soluble in water. They are sugar molecules and they are soluble in water due to the presence of hydroxyl group. The hydroxyl group in the carbohydrate can form hydrogen bonds with water and hence it tends to increase the solubility factor. Hence, the carbohydrates are always soluble in water.
Some of the proteins are soluble in water and some of them are not soluble in water and it depends on the groups that are present in the proteins. The globular proteins tends to dissolve in the water as they have groups which interact with water for example the insulin. When it comes to fibrous proteins, they have hydrophobic groups on the outside and hence they are unable to form bond with water and hence they are insoluble. Example for the same are keratin, collagen etc.
The lipids are the macromolecules which are never soluble in water. This is because the ends of theb lipid molecules are not charged and they do not charge the same electron affinity. The lipids are non-polar and water is polar and hence they do not share electrons.
