What are the major products produced in hte combussion of C10H22 under the following conditions? Write balanced chemical equations for each

a. An excess of oxygen

b. A slightly limited oxygen supply

c. A very limited supply of oxygen

d. The compound is burned in air

Solutions

Expert Solution

C10H22 is a hydrocarbon.

And Generally any hydrocarbon that burns in the air or oxygen produces CO2 and H2O

Major products prouduced during the combustion of C10H22 are CO2 and H2O

a) Excess of oxygen:

C10H22 + O2 --------> CO2 + H2O (unbalanced equation)

C10H22 + 15.5 O2 + k O2 ------> 10CO2 + 11H2O + k O2(Balanced chemical equation)

where k O2 : k number of moles of excess O2

Products are CO2, H2O and O2 (excess )

b) Slightly Limited Oxygen supply case:

Slightly limited can be assumed as theoretically enough , so reaction will be,

C10H22 + 15.5 O2 ------> 10CO2 + 11H2O (balanced equation)

Here, the reaction is just completes no reactans shall be remained.

Therefore, products are CO2 and H2O

C)

C10H22 + m C10H22 + 15.5 O2 ------> 10CO2 + 11H2O + m C10H22 (balanced equation)

( where, m C10H22 = m number of excess moles of C10H22 or remaining moles of C10H22 after limiting reactant O2 cosumed stoichiometric amount of C10H22 )

Therefore, products are CO2, H2O and m C10H22(remained after reaction )

d) The compound is burned in air:

In air, there are many gases that do not react.

Air consists mainly N2 and O2 and some other gases also but not considerable amount

N2 does not react in the reaction and appearas in the production side

And compound is burned in air, that means O2 supply is more than required

C10H22 + n moles of Air ------> 10CO2 + 11H2O + p O2 + n N2 (Balanced chemical equation)

where, p = supplied amount of Oxygen through air ( n) - amount of oxygen consumed during the reaction )

Products are CO2, H2O, O2 and N2

Under anaerobic conditions, ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is produced by the reduction of acetaldehyde (CH3COH) by molecular hydrogen (H2). Free energy of formation (Gf°, kJ/mol): acetaldehyde, -139.9; ethanol, -181.75. a. Write a balanced stoichiometric equation for this process. b.
