How important do you believe it is to be task-oriented and relationship-orientated? How would you describe Musk?
I believe that task-orientated and relationship-orientated are very important factors that a leader needs, like Musk. The task side is the ability to get things done, while the relationship side is the business relationships needed for the company to be successful. Each situation will be a little different and it is up to the leader to be able play the balancing act between the two. They have to have the flexibility to become more task orientated or more relationship orientated. Musk, was a leader that was able to accomplish these traits and cares for his company enough to know that every member of the team is equally helpful in the success of the company.
Why do you think Musk is successful in overcoming obstacles and handling conflict? How do you overcome obstacles in influencing individuals in your life?
Musk is successful in overcoming obstacles and handling conflicts because he believes in the company and creates a constructive climate for the employees working for him. Even at his all-time low, Musk continued to keep the company going and negotiations with investors going because he believed the company would be successful. He did not want to let anyone down and wanted to show that this was the best company of its time. Dealing with personal life and his business life was probably the most stressful time he has faced, and yet, he pursued his goal and stayed focused on it. Influencing individuals in my life to overcome obstacles has been rough. I managed a young security team, and in times of short staffing, not everyone was interested in working overtime. This creates many issues with covering open shifts, even with the reward of time and a half. I would work to try and accommodate them when they needed it, such as a day off or leave early, in hopes that they would help me out when I needed it. A lot of times, they did.
