The element of human life which has been identified by Zhuangzi, one of the greatest literary Chinese texts, as the most prone to misunderstandings is "individualism". It is important to note that the concept of individualism is not just practised in western countries. It is not only an aspect of western culture. This is a misunderstanding or a misconception about the aspect of individualism in human life. Individualism is also present in other cultures, like the Chinese culture. The text of Zhuangzian speaks about individualism in a "dynamic and open" way which is different from individualism followed in Western culture.
So, Zhuangzi clears the concept of Zhuangzian individualism to eliminate misunderstandings regarding the same. According to Zhuangzian individualism, individuals are "changing and unique beings" rather than "fixed and interchangeable atoms”. This individual makes the infinite Dao as the ultimate source of conformity. When an individual conforms, his or her mind is set to enter a space of unlimited openness and independence. Moreover, what is the focus of Zhuangzian individualism is the "inner" individual spirit rather than "outer" material aspects of the social world. So, the way in which Zhuangzian individualism is different from the individualism in the western culture is its focus on the individual spirit to establish one's individualism rather than materialistic gains as a representative of one's individualism. This is how the text of Zhuangzi clears the concept of Chinese individualism, which is prone to misunderstanding as related to the Western concept of individualism.
