Case Study 2: Beverage Delivery
Description of work task(s):
Hazards associated with task(s):
Using the above information, please provide the following:
The ergonomic risk factor identified is the forceful exertion on human body and sustained awkward postures. Exerting more loads on the human body leads to musculoskeletal disorder (MSD). In other words, the excessive load or sustained awkward postures used for carrying heavy loads requires muscles effort to work than normal. This results in physical problems of the tissues, nerves, tendons and ofcourse the muscles.
The solutions to address the risk factors are-
- Engineering controls- Having heavy lift tables, heavy lifting equipment, workstations, etc would reduce muscle effort thus reducing problems with MSD. Benefits are- MSD injuries are reduced, better job satisfaction for the employees.
- Work practice controls – Improvements in the work methods such as using trolleys and carts would help the work to perform his/her task efficiently without straining the muscles. Benefits are- Employees are content that management prioritizes employee well-being, increased loyalty, minimal injuries, etc.
- Body mechanics-Proper body postures need to be educated and trained to the workers to use proper lifting mechanics and techniques to reduce the strain in lifting heavy workload. Benefits are- managerial and employee bondage becomes stronger as employees are educated and trained to be safe, reduced physical injuries, etc.
- Job rotation- job enlargement would help to reduce sustained awkward postures. Benefits are- workers learn other skills as well as they are moved laterally in the organization (skill enhancement of workers).
- Stretch breaks- would provide recovery time to counteract sustained awkward postures. Benefit would include improved work practice and reduced injuries.
