Answer-Structure of
the Lebanese Banking System is overall very sound and stable in
financial terms. The Lebanese Banking System fall under the
jurisdiction of the country's central bank i.e the Bank of Lebanon
(BDL). The BDL plays key roles in the financial system of Lebanese
economy and provides credit to individuals and businesses from time
to time.
The Lebanese Banking System or BDL comprises of a large number of
banks of different sizes, different nature and different ownership
structure. Its structure comprises of small, medium and large-size
private commercial banks; Medium and long-term credit and
investment banks; Islamic Banks; Lebanese, foreign and mixed.Over
the last 50 years, total number of banks in Lebanon are between 60
to 92.The lebanese banks are characterised by significant openness
towards the world. The Lebanese banks have expanded to many
countries abroad through a very large networks of correspondent
branches, affiliated companies, subsidiaries, sister banks and
representative offices etc. Lebanese banks have their branches in
many countries like Africa, Australia,the Gulf region, Europe, and
the United States.
The Lebanese Banking System has a well trained and highly qualified human resources with a high share of university degree holders. There is also a representation of Lebanese women in the Lebanese banks in regular as well as senior positions. The BDL ensure continuous training and exposure. This ensures committment of Labenese banking sector to international norms and development standards.
Since its origin, Lebanese Banking System has been witnessing favorable and sustainable growth. It is characterised by strong balance sheet activity, Well capitalized and provisioned banking sector, Good return and risk measures, high liquidity of assets etc. Strong resilience to financial shocks and crisis is another characteristic of Lebanese banking sector iirrespective of their nature and origins of the shocks.
