failing to innovate- for each of the listed products, determine if the technology used was disruptive or sustaining.
Below I have listed the products from the list and determined if they are disruptive of sustaining.I have included a short argument supporting my conclusions as well. In all most first-mover technologylisted here seems to be disruptive in nature.
1) Apple Newton PDA: Disruptive. Although there were PDAs at the time the Newton attempted tobring together and set of features unheard of at the time. It just failed to do that well.
2) PointCast: Disruptive. The first true “streaming” news source. This service gave birth too manypocket news sources we enjoy today.
3)Gopher Protocol: Disruptive. Until Gopher came along we were stuck combing through localdata bases. Gopher let us reach out and connect. It just could not stand up to the internet [Pai15].
4) VisiCalc: Sustaining. The software lead the way in to spreadsheets, but humans have makingthem for many years. We just used our hands before.
5) Atari Disruptive. Atari led the way bring us home gaming consoles and plug and play gaming[Dig13].
6) Diamond Rio: The Rio helped launch the MP3 revolution until the Apple Ipod outdistanced it[Pai15].
7) Netscape Navigator: Sustaining. Netscape was produced in order to allow people better browsethe web, fitting the definition of meeting current needs.
8) AltaVista: Sustaining. Alta Vista found a new way to provide search results, meeting the need ofinternet users.
9) Ricochet Networks: Sustaining. I am sure many would say this was disruptive. However whenrealized the net card fulfilled the lifelong dreams of many geeks.
10) IBM Simon Phone: Sustaining. The phone pioneered new features in smart phones, improvingthem.
