• Lipoproteins are the biochemical substances that are considered as macromolecules made of lipids and proteins. They are primarily responsible for transportation and distribution of lipid molecules like cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids inside blood stream within the body.

• Classification of Lipoproteins:

(i) Chylomicrons

(ii) Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL)

(iii) Low density lipoproteins (LDL)

(iv) High density lipoproteins (HDL)

• Metabolism of Lipoproteins: It is the process by which the lipid components (i.e. triglycerides, cholesterols) of macromolecular complex called lipoproteins are transported with the plasma and interstitial fluids. Such metabolic process involves transportation of energy in the form of triglycerides from intestine and liver to adipose tissues and muscles. Another will be the transportation of cholesterol from intestine and liver to peripheral tissues.

• Function of Chylomicrons:

(i) They cause transportation of dietary lipid molecules from intestinal tract to various tissues and cells in the blood circulation (i.e. adipose tissues, cardiac tissues and skeletal muscle tissues.)

(ii) The triglycerides part, after hydrolysis from lipoprotein lipase enzymes, provides free fatty acids to be absorbed by the tissues.
