Discuss the importance of data representation methods for presentation of research findings. Why are certain data visualization techniques more appropriate for certain fields/disciplines?
Data are raw facts and in order to make valid comparisons and analysis it is vital to represent it in a proper format. Almost all research findings involve extensive use of data and thus it becomes imperative to employ proper methods while representing the results of a research work. The importance of data representation methods for presentation of research findings can be outlined in the following ways:
Data can be represented as a text, in tabular form or in graphical form. Methods of presentation must be determined according to the data format, the method of analysis to be used, and the information to be emphasized. Thus certain data visualization techniques are more appropriate for certain fields. The application of different methods of data representation varies according to the situation. For example, if one wishes to compare or introduce two values at a certain time point, it is appropriate to use text or the written language. When all information requires equal attention it is appropriate to use a table as it allows readers to selectively look at information of their own interest. Graphs allow readers to understand the overall trend in data, and intuitively understand the comparison results between two groups.
