Briefly, discuss the major data collection methods used in social research
Major data collection methods used in social research-
1- Questionnaires and suveys-
This is a quite popular way as it is a structured one. Respondents opinions/ reflections are received.
Cl;osed ended and open ended questions , both serve this prupose.
This method is quite convenient aand handy.
2- Interviews-
A face to face interaction with the prospects. Recently, telephonic interviews and online interviews have added colours to these endeavours.
It reflects verbal communication that is based on aspcts like reveiving information by the prospects on the basis of their attitudes, perception, experience, personalities, activities, interests, opinions and lifestyles.
3- Observation-
This way of data collection enables the researchers to concentrate on the way people think, behave/act. Varied facets of behaviours can be observed.
Cause and effect relationship is sought after. Whatever is observed, it is recorded. Careful implementation and accuracy are the allied attributes.
4- Focus group research-
This is a discussion based on some pre- communicated information to a group of people. These people discuss, share and come up with fine aspects of the given topic.
Their way of talking and sharing is observed and recorded. The participants in the group may even be paid for it. The group consists of 5-10 people in general and a moderator too.
5- Case studies-
This is a qualitative analysis method.
It reflects a hoilstic, 360 degree vies and a deeper anaysis of the situation.
The entire observation, study, comprehension of a person, organisation or a situation is presented in order to come up with fine conclkusions and suggestions.
