Describe in few words how the two types of bone tissue compact and spongy contribute to any given bone.
The two basic structural bone types are compact bone and spongy
bone where they make up the long bones in the body. The long bones
are dense hard bones which provide strength, structure and
mobility. The spongy bones fills inner layer for most of the bones
where as the compact bone fills outer layer of the bones.
Spongy Bones | Compact Bones |
The Spongy Bones are also called cancellous bones | The Compact bones are also called cortical bones |
They are light, spongy and soft in nature | They are heavy, tough and compact in nature |
They are made up of trabeculae | They are made up of osteons |
They fills the inner layer of most bones | They fills the outer layer of most bones |
Bone-marrow cavity absent in spongy bones | Bone-marrow cavity present in the centre |
Bone marrow produces red corpuscles and white granular corpuscles | Bone marrow stores fat |
It forms the ends or epiphyses of long bones | It forms the shaft or diaphysis of long bones |
