(Answer) People learn new languages to better interact with others socially and also to help with their own cognitive development. Man is a social animal that depends on social interaction for establishing and building relationships. Communication has always been one of the earliest and best tools for social relationships. Body language and verbal language have been the two basic ways through which social cues are translated. This is why people learn a new language.
For a baby, however, that need is different than for a teenager learning French. A baby needs to pick up language in order to get their needs across. Babies pick up languages from their environment by memorising and then by understanding.
When one picks up a new language there are always 2 different elements. One is to memorise words and concepts. The other is to understand the grammar and rules. They are both equally important elements. A baby memorises the word “mama”. But a toddler understands inflection and syntax and eventually forms a sentence that they have never heard before at home. For example, Can I go play with John?
