  1. What is an amphipathic compound? Describe one that is used in your home and what function it serves.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Amphipathic molecules are those which have both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces and therefore can interact with a number of hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules.

Phospholipids are naturally occurring amphipathic molecules which are the repeating units of plasma membrane. They are composed of hydrophilic phosphate head which is exposed to the exterior and interior of the cell so that it can interact with the hydrophilic environment and fatty acids to form the hydrophobic core of the membrane which can interact with hydrophobic molecules only.

Artificially synthesized amphipathic molecule which is used in every household is soap or a detergent. It is made up of hydrophobic fatty acid and hydrophilic anion or cation is present. It is used for cleaning purposes because it can interact with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules thereby pulling them from the surface which is to be cleaned.

What would be the expected orientation of an amphipathic alpha helix occurring in a globular protein in aqueous solution? Select one: a. Hydrophilic amino acids are complementary to hydrophobic amino acids, so the hydrophilic side of the alpha helix should be facing toward the hydrophobic core of the protein. b. A soluble protein will have mostly hydrophilic amino acids in its core, so the helix will be arranged to have the hydrophilic side facing toward the core of the protein....
