In a certain species of rodent, the fur color is determined by a single gene locus with two possible alleles. Brown fur is dominant over yellow. In a particular population, 496 animals have brown fur and 731 have yellow fur. Of those with brown fur, 64 of are homozygous and 432 are heterozygous.
(a) Calculate the frequency of the two alleles in the population (p and q). Using B for the brown allele and b for the yellow allele, let p = frequency of B and q = frequency of b.
(b) Using chi-square, test whether or not the genotypes in this population are in the Hardy-Weinberg proportions.
