There are 723 seniors at a large high school.

(a) Explain how you would use a random number table to select a random sample of 30 seniors. Explain your method clearly! I should be able to hand you directions to Mr. Carter and he should be able to select the sample.

(b) Using the random digits below, select the first five seniors using your method from Part (a).

73190 32533 04470 29669 84407 90785 65956 86382

a)

Procedure for using a random number table to select a random sample of 30 seniors.

  1. As we have a population of 723 students, we will assign each student a number from 1 to 723.
  2. Since we have a population of 723 which is a three digit number, we will consider only first three digits of the numbers listed on the random number chart.
  3. We randomly point to a select a number from the random number chart. Suppose, we will assume that we selected 73190 as the first number. we consider only first three digits, 731 is the number.
  4. As we don’t have a student with that number(731), we select the next number 325 from (32533).
  5. Now, since we have a student with 325 number, we choose the student with the number 325 and continue.
  6. Continue upto 30 seniors are sllected

11. High School Standardized Test Past experience indicates that the time required for high school seniors to complete a standardized test is a normal random variable with a mean of 35 minutes (normally distributed). If a random sample of 30 high school seniors took an average of 33.5 minutes to complete this test with a standard deviation of 4 minutes, test the hypothesis, at the 0.05 level of significance, that u = 35 minutes against the alternative that u <35...
