Limitations of the Employee performance evaluation methods in HRM -

1. Graphic rating method - while is it is the one of the most effective method to scale down employee's quantitative aspects of various traits & factors like quality, reliability, efficiency etc generally In the form of LIKART scale segments ranging from 1(poor), 2 ( fair), 3( Satisfactory), 4 (good ) to 5 (excellent ) . it have some limitations also as mentioned below.

  • It is more concise & effective only when a single supervision monitor & evaluates two different employee characteristics.
  • Difficulty in rating as rating is done on a specific scale ex- poor vs excellent, so there are the chances of judgemental errors.
  • The rating against the behavioural characteristics are tend to be ambiguous & not very reliable as the human intangible traits like honesty , trust etc are subject to change with culture & judgement.

2. Alternate ranking scale method - This is one of the most easy rating scale method to conceptualize as it involve the comparative pairing of the top most attribute with the least most attribute followed by the second top most with the second least most & carry on. Some of its limitations are as below.

  • This method becomes unreliable with increasing complexity due to the increase in number of jobs to large numbers.
  • Difficult to evaluate as jobs increase.
  • Judgements are totally objective based hence makes its scope limited.

3. Critical Incident Method - The critical incident method is one of real time observatory method of its own type. It document all the critical activities done by an employee, whether having their positive or the negative aspects. It is implemented either on the more frequent basis or the yearly observation. Some of its limitations are as below.

  • It requires close supervision of the employees thereby might be making them uncomfortable.
  • Chances of negative activities to be highlighted more easily & very highly as compared to the positive ones.
  • Regular supervision of the employees by managers requires higher time consumption out of their busy scheschedule & other important works.
