What are the statistics used to summarize categorical data?

What are the statistics used to summarize categorical data?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Statistics used to summarize data:

1. Frequency Table: Calculating counts for each combination of a categorical variable. For e.g. Count of female and male in the data.

2. Proportion: Calculate the frequency of each combination of categorical variable and divide each with total frequency to get the proportion of each combination of a categorical variable. e.g. Calculation the proportion of Married, Single and Widowed in marital status variable.

3. Contingency Table/Marginals : Calculate marginal frequencies and represent it as a table which shows total counts / percentages for marginal frequencies.

e.g.            F          M

Married      x11       x12

Single       x21       x22

Widowed   x31       x32

4: Visualization: Make bar graphs or pie charts for the categorical variable. e.g. Bar graph for total count of population in each state of India or Pie chart for what proportion of total population lives in each state of India.
